Dental implants in Halifax - Dentist in Halifax - Halifax Dentist

Swedish orthodontist Dr P.I. Branemark was the man who pioneered the modern technology for implants. His key discovery was that teeth can bond with titanium in a process called ‘osseointegration’. This revolutionized the field of implantology and set the mark for further innovations.

This is a long way from the early days of denture implants. In 1815, teeth were taken from soldiers who died during the Battle of Waterloo. These were inserted into a piece of ivory, such as that from a hippopotamus, to make an early form of dentures. This morbid method was called ‘Waterloo Teeth’.

Thankfully, this process is no longer necessary. We now have artificial teeth made from composite resin. These are fixed into the implants that are planted into the gum. The mouth adjusts and strengthens as the gums heal around the implants, which are permanent. They are not removable like conventional dentures. Dental implants can also be used to support dentures.

Implants have the benefit of being sturdy, permanent fixtures in your mouth. Implants allow for the user to chew the toughest foods without much issue, as conventional dentures can sometimes come loose. They must be cleaned and maintained like natural teeth, with twice daily brushing and regular flossing. Other options if you have missing or broken teeth could be crowns, dentures or a restorative procedure. Implants are not for everyone but this is something to discuss with your Halifax dentist here at Santé Dental.
